museum and exhibition design

The peep-inside model of the castle is approx 3-metre cube

The Norman keep at Norwich has been the City’s museum for over a century. The need for refurbishment was acute, to preserve the fabric, to improve access and to interpret the collection.

Our work comprised new lighting to enhance the interpretation of the building itself, and new showcasing throughout. We also devised historical settings, such as a prison and an Iron Age encampment, which incorporated authentic exhibits as well as hands-on devices, videos and interactive computers.
A complex high-security showcase presents the civic regalia, while a 3m-cube model of the castle (which rolls aside to make space for functions) allows glimpses of medieval life inside.

Emphasis is placed on family-friendly and socially-inclusive design, e.g. a soft-play area and wheelchair accessible displays.
